Factory Relocation Feasibility Study

Project Overview:

Project: Factory Relocation
Client: Confidential
Where: Balikpapan, Indonesia
IntES Services: Feasibility Study

About our Client:

Our client is an international mining service company, which had developed mining projects all over the world for more than 90 years.

About the Project:

As the client had a plan to relocate one of their factories and its ancillary facilities (including utilities, dormitory and temporary offices), our team at IntES was trusted to conduct a Feasibility Study. The scope included to identify a suitable location and an efficient layout of the compound for the factory. The new facility will have an office & workshop for their heavy equipment maintenance, which requires land of around 90,000sqm.

Our Approach:

We appointed an expert IntES team that was responsible for providing and reporting to the client the necessary information regarding the feasibility of the location of the new facility. The first step involved our experts surveying existing facilities to understand the status of the factory and collect the necessary data for the study. After updating and agreeing to the final scope, our IntES team along with the client started to identify suitable locations and land that could be used for relocating the facility, workshop, office, and equipment storage.

Challenges and Project Outcome:

The most challenging aspect of this project is that the client wanted to build the new facilities in a rural area. Our team needed to consider multiple factors when selecting the location to ensure ideal conditions for a factory and other facilities to be built on. Some of these factors include geographic isolation, public transportation, environmental barriers, all of which played a crucial role in the choice of the land plot. For instance, the new facility should have access to a port with the required capacity for the terminal, while must be easily accessible by road, allowing for the transportation of heavy loads of up to 40 tons using lowboy trailers.

This is not our first project related to a feasibility study of a factory in a remote area, so we leveraged our previous experience to conduct it seamlessly. Working closely with the client’s team, we organized multiple meetings and site visits to identify suitable locations and land in the area which can meet the requirements. After thorough research and evaluation, we proposed a few recommended options to the client for the relocation of their facilities. In the final stage, we delivered to the client a comprehensive report which included both general and detailed information, explaining why the chosen land/location was fit for the purpose.
