Medical Device Manufacturing Facility in Indonesia

Project Overview

Project: New medical device manufacturing facility

Client: Confidential

Location: Cikarang, Indonesia

Scope of Work: Engineering, Procurement Support

About the client

Our client is a forward-thinking company in the in vitro diagnostics (IVD) field. They specialize in infectious diseases, cancer, and chronic conditions. Their mission is to leverage their diverse technology platforms to offer clinical solutions for patients across all disease stages—from early screening and initial diagnosis to treatment monitoring and managing minimal residual disease.

About the project

The project is a state-of-the-art medical device manufacturing facility in the Jababeka 7 Industrial Area, Cikarang, Indonesia. The facility spans 12,000 m², with a building area of 8,900 m². It is dedicated to producing high-quality In Vitro Diagnostic (IVD) products, including immunology, biochemistry, hematology, HPLC, HbA1c, and molecular diagnostics.

It is divided into four main areas: warehouse, production, utility, and office. A key component is the production area, which requires specialized HVAC systems to maintain optimal temperature, humidity, cleanliness, and air circulation. Specific zoning for clean room classifications is also essential to meet stringent standards. Being entrusted by the client, IntES Indonesia was responsible for this new medical device manufacturing facility Engineering stage.

IntES’s Approach

The scope of work of the design & engineering services in this project is divided into 4 main parts:

  1. Data Collection & Schematic Design: we took responsibility for reviewing the concept design and proposing improvements throughvalue engineering before starting the detailed design development stage. First of all, we collected preliminary data from the client team such as the concept design, the as-built drawings, soil investigation data, and other building-related documents. After that, we undertook the step of design review based on the best practices and applied local & international standards.
  2. Construction Documentation (Detail Design Development): IntES engineers developed the Detailed Engineering Design for the tender phase, with several deliverables including BOM, vendor lists and technical specifications
  3. Bill of Quantity & Cost Estimation: We provided the bill of quantity and cost estimation based on the approved design.
  4. Tender Services: IntES helped the client identify potential bidders, prepare tender documents, conduct pre-bid meetings, address technical queries, and evaluate proposals.

Challenges

This medical manufacturing facility engineering project presented several significant challenges that required expert management and innovative solutions. The first challenge was that the project involved constructing a large-scale manufacturing plant, requiring a comprehensive EPCM approach to integrate engineering, procurement, and construction activities. In addition, IntES team focused on careful scheduling and effective resource management to ensure we could meet timely completion as well as regulatory requirements. During the project, our local team coordinated with many other teams, both internal and external, to generate the outcomes as expected within the project budget. To obtain this, our team provided precise control and proactive management throughout all the project stages.

Project Outcomes

Our IntES team in Indonesia was proud to complete this project within the agreed timeline, thanks to effective project management solutions, value engineering and processes that optimized the efficiency. In addition, the facility adhered to all regulatory and environmental standards, ensuring a smooth approval process and sustainable operations. One of the most important outcomes was that we delivered the project within the proposed budget by utilizing efficient cost management, value engineering, and best procurement practices. This project also helped our client meet the future production demand and contributed to employing numerous people.
