FEL-2 and FEL-3 Study for New Pilot Plant Facilities

Project Overview:

Client: Confidential
Project: FEL-2 and FEL-3 study for new pilot plant facilities
Location: Wageningen, Netherlands
IntES’s Services: Engineering Consultancy, Project Management

About our client

Our client is a global manufacturer in aroma recovery, extraction and evaporation solutions for food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries. They offer processors the ability to manufacture products to the high-quality-level of demand.

About the project

The project is located in Wageningen, Netherlands, where our client is creating a new pilot plant which will be very important to their business. This new pilot plant is to be where they will conduct important testing with and for their clients in order to generate sales. Furthermore the pilot plant is to be the hub where they develop new company activities for the coming 10-15 years, therefore the specification needed to be particularly wide. Our client, (referred to us by some of our other valued clients), engaged IntES to conduct a thorough FEL-2 and FEL-3 study for the utilities of the pilot plant. In particular, this required cooperation with the building owner and client to specify the requirements of the utilities, design layout of the utility room and defining the tie-in points.

Our Approach

The new building, to be leased by our client, is a new Greenfield site, however as the building design was fixed we needed to approach it as a brownfield project; instead of designing something new, we would find achievable adaptations to the design of the spaces to make it suitable for our client’s needs. The specifications for utilities were defined by our client, but very quickly it became clear that this had to be redefined with building owner and client together. As the FEL-2 and FEL-3 study progressed, our scope developed to include more liaison and communication with the building owner in order to ensure that both parties were happy with the proposed adaptations.

Our dedicated Netherlands-based team took on this project responsible to the engineering management and worked closely with IntES’ High Value Engineering Centre (HVEC) in Vietnam to develop the engineering documents and create a detailed 3D model of the utilities design. Navisworks was used to present the 3D model, which was ideal for discussing with the building owner and our client and quickly assessing possibilities and changes that were recommended.

Flexibility and adaptability were key in this FEL-2 and FEL-3 study, but just as with all our projects, we put the client at the heart of everything we do. In the end through clear communication and collaborative working, we were able to achieve the desired outcome and a very satisfied client. We look forward to working with our client again in the future, and seeing how this pilot plant progresses.
